General presentation

The "Evènements extrêmes" project aims to use human and natural records of past extreme events to better understand current anomalies and place them in an evolving context. Different matrices within a territory react in complex and permanent ways to these hydrometeorological accidents, and an interdisciplinary analysis of the relationships between the different types of impacts can highlight cascading effects and their interference with the modifications induced by climate change.

Understanding these unpredictable and uncertain events, and their impacts on vital parameters for natural ecosystems and human society, is essential to develop rapid response/mitigation measures, in addition to ongoing climate change adaptation practices. The overall objective of the project is, therefore, to develop a holistic methodology to define and monitor indicators of extreme hydrometeorological events, capable of anticipating cascading effects on the different components of a territory in the short and long term, in particular, at the head of the volcanic basins of the mid-mountain Massif Central.

Goals

1. How can we define and distinguish extreme hydrometeorological events at the head of volcanic basins in the Massif Central?

2. Is it possible to identify indicators that more effectively record an extreme event outside of the general climate change trend?
